What Is A ViewTalkie? A Modern Upgrade To An Old Favorite

A young troop scout using a view talkie outdoors.

A myFirst ViewTalkie is a kids’ video walkie-talkie: a pair of handheld devices that let children see, talk, and play with someone nearby over a private, device-to-device connection. No internet required. Two ViewTalkies come in every bundle, so there’s someone on the other end from the moment you open the box.

Think of it as the walkie-talkie you remember, plus a tiny screen for the things kids really need to share, like a funny face or the extremely important object they just found on the floor.

Bonus points if they catch the family dog having a wild dream.

How Does a ViewTalkie Work?

Each ViewTalkie has a 2.0-inch IPS screen and a 0.3MP camera. Turn both on and they auto-connect directly to each other over a local 2.4 GHz wireless link. There’s no Wi-Fi to set up and no password to forget. Fewer steps for them, one less thing for you to explain.

Once connected, kids can:

  • Video call to show off a drawing, a hiding spot, or a dramatic new haircut for the stuffed animal they were told not to give a haircut.
  • Voice call when they don’t need a picture. If the signal weakens, ViewTalkie switches to voice-only automatically, so the conversation carries on instead of dramatically ending.
  • Change their voice with three effects: Kid, Alien, and Robot. Evil Robot is based on how the kid wants to portray said Robot.
  • Add face stickers to the live camera feed, with seven silly ones to choose from.

How Far Does a ViewTalkie Reach?

Outdoors, video calls reach up to 400 m (1,312 ft) and voice calls up to 500 m (1,640 ft), which is over a quarter mile. Indoors, walls and reality shorten that to up to 150 m (492 ft) for video and 200 m (656 ft) for voice. That’s still plenty of room to play.

More Than a Toy: A Parent-and-Kid Check-In

ViewTalkie is built for play, but it can also be a handy way for families to stay in touch.

Say there’s a park nearby and your child is old enough to walk there on their own. You keep one ViewTalkie at home and they take the other. They can check in, show you the very cool stick they found (it’s not, but you humor them), and hear you say “dinner in ten.” Because the connection is private and goes only between the two paired devices, it keeps the focus on the person they’re calling, not the rest of the internet.

Range depends on your neighborhood, so test it out together first. And you know your kid best: whether they’re ready for a solo walk to the park is your call, not ours. Parenting is hard enough. A walkie-talkie with a screen just makes one small part of it a bit easier.

The 90s Sitcom Setup

Remember when the best friend lived next door and communication meant a flashlight signal, a tin can on a string, or shouting from a window? ViewTalkie brings that back.

If your child’s best friend lives within range, a few houses down or around the corner, each kid keeps one ViewTalkie and they can “call each other’s houses” whenever they like. They can plan the afternoon, show off a new LEGO build, or have a very serious conversation in robot voice. It’s classic neighborhood-friendship energy, no phone required.

3 Games to Play With a ViewTalkie

1. Video Hide and Seek. One kid hides while the other counts. Once hidden, the hider flips on video and gives clues by showing a sliver of their surroundings. The seeker uses the camera clues to track them down. Bonus points for hiding behind something that makes no sense.

2. Mission Control. One kid plays Mission Control and talks in Robot voice. The other is the field agent, who has to complete missions around the house or yard. The agent reports back in Alien voice, as a twist, because he was an alien all along.

3. Silly Face Showdown. Pick a face sticker, go live, and try to make the other player laugh first. Whoever cracks up loses.

A Great Gift for the Holiday Season

Two kids using viewtalkies

Looking for a holiday gift that doesn’t need a second purchase? ViewTalkie arrives as a pair, so the fun is ready the moment the wrapping paper comes off. Give one to your child and one to a sibling, a cousin, or a best friend down the street, and nobody is left waiting for batteries or a sidekick.

One pro tip: charge both devices before wrapping. A full charge takes about 3 hours, and with lanyards and silicone cases in the box, they’re ready to head from the living room to the backyard the second they’re unwrapped.

So, What Is a ViewTalkie?

I think you know by now, but it’s a video walkie-talkie for kids, built for showing, talking, and playing together. It’s also a small way for families and friends to stay connected, with no internet in between.

View. Talk. Play.
